I wanted to share with you all a message that I recently sent to the editors of Oxygen Magazine. They had mentioned referring to the Future of Fitness section (which I love) to see where you should be in terms of height vs. weight. In theory, this is a good idea...however, the women they have chosen for that particular issue are incredibly low in weight! Many of my clients (and me personally) would need to lose muscle in order to get weights that low...seriously, 5'4" at 105 lbs...that is just far too thin!!!
Here is my message...
Hi! I wanted to address a recent mention in the magazine about appropriate weights for women competing. It was suggested that you should refer to the future of fitness section to compare your height with the women there to see what your target weight should be. In general I think this is a good idea, however, the women in the future of fitness section for the November 09 issue seem to be considerably lower in reported weight than what I would recommend for a women competing. Since figure competitors need to have good muscle tone, their lean mass needs to be relatively high. With your future of fitness women being 105 lbs at 5'4", that is incredibly low. Personally ON STAGE I weigh 128 lbs at 5'4 1/2. Off-season I feel fit and healthy at 135 lbs. My concern is that I have received messages from women referring to the article and wondering how they can possibly get to 105-115 lbs when their lean mass is higher than this! At 5'4" I would consider 105 lbs to be much to thin. One thing I love about Oxygen is how you promote healthy weight ranges and healthy bodies in general for women - not super model skin and bones. As women, we love to compare and have a good idea of where we should be in order to look how we want to look. I hope that in the future, you show women with weight to height ratios that take lean mass and muscle tone into account.
Thanks for always inspiring and motivating!!!
Sincerely,
Julie Lohre

55 Year old Grandmother comes in Top 5 at Figure Show!
I just received an email from a woman that competed in her first show at 55. She purchased my Ultimate Posing Guide for Fitness & Figure for her posing practice...
Hi Julie,
Well the time finally came, my show. I purchased your tapes months ago, and as I promised here are the pictures of the OCB Cape Cod 2009 Bodybuilding, Figure competition.
Out of 13 girls in the novice class I came in 5th, not bad for a 55 year old grandmother, competing against 20-30 year olds. Your tapes helped me a lot, thank you. I am pictured with my trainer Kim Guilds.

Mock Competiton/NPC Figure & Bikini Camp Huge Success!
The bi-annual FitBody Mock Competition and NPC Figure & Bikini Contest Prep camp was held on Sept 19th in the Northern KY/Cincinnati area. Over 25 women from across the country came to find out the specifics of competing and to take their posing skills to the next level.
When I first began competing, my biggest challenge was finding out what it really took to step on stage. How did I stack up against the other women competing? What did it feel like to actually walk on stage? How are the shows run? What kind of heels do I need to wear? What is this tanning process all about? And most importantly - how the heck do I pose????
With those questions in mind, I put together a camp with one goal - helping women walk on stage fully equipped. Knowing what they needed to do to both look and feel like a seasoned competitor - even if it was their first show. With a combination of seminars on everything from "What the judges are looking for" to a live Tanning demonstration from LiquidSunrayz.com to 'How to Pump Up backstage' with Oxygen FitBands provided by KimberlyCastle.com. From multiple posing sessions and a full mock contest on a stage just like the one most NPC shows are run on. We had a great time, meet lots of women in our same shoes and really, really worked on posing. It is always one of my favorite events and one of the few opportunities I get to spend an extended period of time with the women.
Thank you to all of the women that attended and a HUGE thank you to the women who supported this camp:
NPC National Figure Competitor Marcy Purcey
Marilyn at LiquidSunrayz.com
Kim at KimberlyCastle.com

Leaning Out while nursing - Q&A
Here is a question I have received several times in the last week...
Hi Julie!
Wow! I just went to your site and I am amazed! I am hoping you can help me with me situation since you are the ONLY person I have seen that nursed while leaning out.
I am the proud mother of a 7 month old boy and my pregnancy was similar to yours in that I continued to work out throughout with some weight and cardio (I watched people part like the red sea when I came into the gym at 9 months, it was funny). I watched what I ate but still gained more weight then I had planned. I am in pretty good shape now but always want to be better and I am looking to do my first competition next year. I am doing a modified carb cycling program with some success but, I have not been able to find ANY literature regarding fat loss and breast feeding. Please let me know what you did while breast feeding to get lean.
Thank you for any advice you can give!
Samantha
Hi Samantha!
Congratulations on your new baby and I am glad to hear that you are taking control of your body and getting to the place you want to be. It is very challenging to lean out given all of the demands of motherhood and considering what your body has just gone through with pregnancy. There is very little information about fat loss while breast feeding. However, the truth is, it is much like fat loss when not breast feeding. The biggest exceptions are that you DO need extra calories (300-400 per day), more dairy and will not be able to include any type of fat loss supplement. To be on the safe side, I only recommend a pre-natal vitamin and high quality protein powder for my clients that are nursing or pregnant. There is simply not enough research to know how most supplements impact the baby - so it is best to avoid them all together. My best advice is to eat an abundance of healthy foods - lean protein, lots of vegetables, some complex carbs and a modest amount of healthy fats. Follow a good training program that balances weights and cardio. Don't overdo it though - the right balance of working out will increase your energy levels, not decrease it.
Best of luck!
Julie

FITBODY Training & Nutrition Logs - Now Available!
Successfully reaching your fitness goals depends on knowing where you are coming from and where you plan to go! When starting out with their fitness regime, most people usually can not be bothered to keep logs. It is perhaps the last thing on their minds. But research proves that trainees that keep a details training and nutrition log stay motivated longer and have better results than those who do not!
The fundamental reason why it is important to keep workout logs and records is so that you can keep track of how much progress you are making. Without these logs and records, it would be virtually impossible to monitor both performance and progress. Keeping a detailed log saves you a whole lot of time and in the long-run, it can in fact facilitate the results you obtain from your workouts.
After years of trial and error I have developed a training log that is ideal for both the competitor and the woman looking to take her fitness results to the next level. My 8 week Training & Nutrition log will help YOU stay motivated and continually pressing toward your long term goals.
What's included:
- Extremely detailed exercise journal for every day
- Full Nurtition Journal for every day
- Detailed Grocery Checklist
- Food Exchange List (**my favorite**)
- Fitness Assessment Sheet
- Progress Tracking
- Nutrition Tips
- Weight management tips & information
8 week FitBody Training & Nutrition Log - $20

Incorporating yoga for NPC Bikini and Figure competitors
For all of you NPC Bikini and Figure competitors looking to lengthen the look of your muscles and round out your physique, I cannot more highly recommend yoga. I have come to love including yoga several times a week, whether by itself first thing in the morning to wake up and enjoy the peace and quiet, after a hard workout to help cool down and stretch out well worked muscles or before bed as a peaceful way to bring your mind and body into a good place. We have plenty of stress we deal with each day. Yoga has helped me become more centered, kept me incredibly flexible and offers me a low-no impact workout.
I recommend that NPC Bikini and Figure competitors incorporate at least one full yoga class per week. At minimum, take 20 mins 3 times a week and go through your favorite yoga poses.
Enjoy!

Photos from the Triathlon
I DID IT! Completed my first Triathlon!
Tri For Joe - Triathlon to support Down's Syndrome Research!
First, let me say, I am just overwhelmed by the support I have received from all of you! It means the world to me that you are here, backing me while I try something so far out of my comfort zone. I have to say, the triathlon was truly one of the hardest things I have done, mostly because it is sooo different from how I usually train and compete. I have never been a huge fan of cardio and endurance training is super tough for me. With all my knee surgeries, including the newest one that is not quite healed, I did have to pace myself on the run (for me that meant cycles of sprint...pound...ouch!...walk...recover : ) but the biking and swimming were incredible. Ok, the swim was actually not so incredible. The water was about 55 degrees and the minute I jumped in, I felt like I had hit a brick wall. I just could not breath and swallowed what felt like a gallon of water! But, I guess in the end I did breath and I did swim because eventually I was out of the water and thanking God for it! Note to self - practice race events in the conditions that you will actually be competing in. Don't spending hours upon hours in a nice heated pool then jumping in the Arctic waters that can be present in May in OH!
I think the most important thing I have learned through the process of preparing for this event is that changing up your training program completely with a new purpose challenges your body and brain in brand new ways. I have been able to find a balance between eating healthy, feeling great about my body and loving training again. It was also amazing to 'Race with a purpose' as my new event t-shirt says. We raised more than $20,000 for Down Syndrome Research!
Overall, I ended up placing 30th out of 100+ women and 8th in my age class. Not bad given that I cannot run!
We will definitely have to form a group for one very soon! In fact, most events have a relay, so we could do that too! I call dibs on the biking leg!!!!
Congrats to Karrie Cheeseman who also braved the icy cold waters with me yesterday and kicked some booty at the triathlon. She was incredible and I loved having a team mate with me at this first event. GO KARRIE!!!!

NPC Bikini
Do you want to know what look the NPC Bikini Division is going in? Check out photos of the short class Bikini winner - Roxanne Dunaway - from the NPC Northern Kentucky Figure, Bikini & Bodybuilding show. Roxanne not only had an incredible physique, she had stage presence that knocked the judges socks off and made everyone in the 2000+ packed house stop and take notice! Congrats Roxanne!!!
You can see more of Roxanne on her FitBody Profile page.
I hope this type of balanced physique is what the judges continue to reward as the Bikini division evolves. As one judge so eloquently put it - were not looking for 'a stick with boobs - Bikini needs to still have shape!'. Good to know : )

Incredible Transformations!
Over the last few months I have had the pleasure of working with some incredibly motivated and inspirational women. They have put in the hours, sweat and tears to make incredible personal transformations. Two women in particular have made so much progress that many of their friends do a double take when walking by. I am so proud to get to be a part of their life changing progress. Congrats Erin & Jenna!

"I gained 80 pounds with my first pregnancy and have now lost it all and then some! Since I started with Julie in Dec. I have lost 11% bodyfat in 14 weeks, and still counting!! Without a doubt, being part of Julie's Team FitBody made this possible. The support from Julie and the other girls has kept me on track, focused, and motivated. Even though I have known how to work out and eat right I really didn't make big changes until I had a specific plan , a tangible goal, and people to be held accountable to."

"I have battled my weight my entire life. I always considered myself the "fat friend". When my friends were sharing clothes, i was trading earrings and necklaces because they were the only thing that always fit. When i was at a pool or walking down a beach I always had shorts on over my bathing suit. I decided two years ago enough was enough and that I wanted to stop hiding. I started lifting and building muscle and slowly losing the weight, 30 lbs in a years time. I contacted Julie in October of 2008, and she helped me shed another 40 lbs and 26 inches in 25 weeks. For the first time ever, I stood in front of not only one person, but hundreds of people without covering my legs and I was confident and felt beautiful. It was one of the greatest moments of my life."

All I can say is WOW! The team certainly made me proud this weekend with an incredible showing at the 2009 NPC Northern Kentucky! A record 261 athletes turned out to show all of their hard work. This was the first year for NPC Bikini and for the show without a 1 piece suit round. As always, the show was incredibly well run and a great experience. Roger & Sandy Reidinger are fabulous promoters and consistantly put on a show that is not only great to participate in, it is a fun, family oriented event that Kentucky should be very proud to have!
Every year, the competition gets tougher! This is the most competitive NPC show you will find short of a National level show and it is run better than many pro shows in my opinion. The athletes are treated like, well, athletes and the standing room only crowd of 2000+ people was treated to some of the mid-west's best competitors. With some classes approaching 20 competitors the judges did a great job of taking their time, but still running an efficient show.
Thanks to all of people that stopped by my booth to say HI! I feel like this show is a reunion of sorts and it was great to see so many familiar faces.

Team Results:
Figure A
Yvette Lepore 4th
Figure B
Michelle Yatsuk 1st
Jane Archer 4th
Figure C
Joelle Miller 1st
Kim Cory 2nd
Masters 35 + Tall
Brenda Johnson 1st
Melissa Jackson 4th
Jennifer Sproles
Bikini Short
Roxanne (aka "Foxy Roxy") Dunaway 1st
Kimberly Castle 2nd
Bikini Tall
Tina Fondaw 3rd

Special shout out to Kevin Cory who placed 2nd in the Novice Light Heavyweight Division in a very tough class of 15...at his first show!!!

New Photography Workshop

Rick Lohre Photography is excited to bring Nationally Acclaimed photographer David Bean to Cincinnati! If you have an interest in taking your photography to the next level or making it an incredible career, check out www.lightandcommerce.com
Light and Commerce is a photography workshop like no other. I named it Light and Commerce because the workshop is divided into 2 parts.
• THE TECHNICAL (Light)
• THE BUSINESS (Commerce)
You will learn from BOTH an artistic/technical and business side how to produce and pull off commercial photo shoots as well as how to not just run a business, but “stay” in business and turn profits.
April 25th Cincinnati, OH
Would love to see you there!

Arnold Amateur Show - Team FitBody Rocks!!!!
**A HUGE thanks to Kim Cory for this report....
Last night was truly a night for the ladies of Team Fitbody! Pre-Judging was held at the Vets memorial in Columbus OH. After a LONG night, many of our favorite contenders are now in the running for top 10 in their class and will compete in the final rounds this Saturday morning. For pictures and details visit bodybuilding.com or musculardevelopment.com.
In fitness Michele Yeager rocked the stage in what I would like to describe as true Julie Lohre style. Impressive strength, ajility, and confidence. She also was first call outs (top 5) in her class during the 2-piece suit round! Way to go Michele!

In figure there was some real tough competition as to be expected, but many of our Team Fitbody ladies shined on stage. One girl who is close to most of us on the team right now Michelle Yatsuk brought home what I call POWER! Her physique was better then I had ever seen it, beautiful, confident and overall conditioning impressive. In Michelle's class there were 31 girls and I am happy to say she has made it to the top 10 in her class to compete at the finals. Way to go girl, we are all so proud of you. What an inspiration.

Another woman that has secured a spot in the Top 10 is Amanda Moran. She has made some incredible changes over the last year and is in excellent condition.

For those of you who have not met some of these other ladies Julie has worked with over the years, I would like to congratulate a few and hopefully you can be on the look out for them too. Stephanie Billings in class F will for sure place top 5. Once again the best I have seen her, full, muscular, conditioned and STUNNING!

Autumn Edwards in fitness tall class brought her A game just like I knew she would in her energetic and powerful routine, to her perfect symetry physique.
In the bikini division it was the first time ever in the NPC division to hold this event. No one really knew what to expect or how the judges would really end up with their votes. In the end they are looking for a very soft, toned, and lean look. Very similar to a hawaiin tropics model or models you would see in fitness rx magazine. It was fun watching these girls with the sexy and fun suits, to the laxed posing and sex appeal. In the bikini division Kimberly Castle- stunning lady in red with absolute beauty finished in the top 10 in her class, Lisa Browning - also a Top 10 finisher and Brooke Johnson finished 4th in her class.

Make sure to congratulate all these ladies the next time you talk with them. They all have worked so hard in their own unique ways and have truly made all of us on Team Fitbody proud! Congratulations ladies

Contest Prep Camp!
Wow! What an incredible weekend! I want to thank the 19 ladies that made the trek to Cincinnati for this weekends contest prep camp. We spent Friday afternoon - evening at the gymnastics center focusing on Motivation, all aspects of Figure & Bikini posing and wrapped up with some truly hard core workouts. Mixing plyometrics, body weight exercises, sprinting drills, relays and 300 is my favorite way to workout and I had a lot of fun sharing that with you all!
From there we headed off to a well deserved dinner. Even though we had a bit of a wait to get seated, it was worth it to watch the waiter go down our line at Long Horn Steakhouse with our extra orders of veggies, no butter and 'can you make that completely dry''??? Good thing they did not bring the bread!!! As a side note, I am really excited to see Roxanne & Erin on the amazing race...I will be submitting your photos : )
Saturday morning we meet at a local high school with an amazing theater I had rented out for this occasion. Stepping on stage for a test run before the show makes such a different We began with body comps all the way around - CONGRATS to Joelle who lost 2.8% in the last 3 weeks to be our biggest loser!!!! From there we moved on to Final Week contest prep - what to expect and how to come in at your personal best for the shows. With a combination of seminars and posing clinics we focused on what each woman can do to make her physique look great on stage.
Kimberly Castle (www.KimberlyCastle.com) provided all of the women their own Oxygen FitBand Kit and we got to do a workout with those - Thanks Kim! From there we had a quick lunch and some great conversation.
After the workout and lunch, it was time to put on posing suits and heels to take the stage. With the lights shining and a huge theater ready for us, the group was broken into 3 classes - short, tall & bikini. From there we went through every step of a real contest, from the competitors meeting to night show. Each woman hit the stage, smiled and got a chance to really see what her show would be like.
We followed the Mock Competition with another hard core plyometric/SWAT and full body workout before wrapping up the day with a detailed 'how to' seminar on the final contest details - tanning, makeup and overall polish. Spending time with so many women that have similar goals was not only motivating it was down right exciting. Thank you to everyone that took part, you each brought something special and I am really excited to see you step on stage at your shows, confident and prepared.
Thanks!!!!

A positive outlook on this economy
I am in general a very positive person. And it has been a challenge for me lately to take all of the negativity that is flying around. Below is an article by Dave Ramsey - a financial expert who tells it like it is. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! Check him out at www.DaveRamsey.com
Julie
Update From Dave On The Economy
I’m tired of hearing all the gloom and doom coming from the media about the economy and unemployment—I bet you are, too! Let’s take a minute to look at the true reality of the situation and what we can do about it.
Yes, many people have lost their jobs and houses. You may be one of them. But guess what? People have lost their jobs and houses even in a bull market. About 93% of people are still employed. That is pretty good! I was alive in the 1970s when unemployment hit double digits, and we’re nowhere near that right now! I’m not making light of the fact that some people are struggling; I’m just putting the situation in the proper perspective.
Even though you may be currently unemployed, that doesn’t mean you have to participate in the recession. People like me who have chosen to not participate acknowledge the reality of a slow economy and suffering people. However, we have decided that we’re not going to form our lives around the negativity coming out of the media and government. We’re intensifying our efforts and going to have the best year of our lives in spite of things slowing down.
Some people who find themselves unemployed will go into new careers or start their own businesses where they have the best year of their lives—professionally, financially and emotionally. Their current job losses are actually blessings in disguise. They believe this and are formulating game plans based on it. I guarantee there are men in their garages right now starting their own mechanic shops. The next Mary Kay Ash is writing up a business plan for new products she’s just created. College students are developing “the next best thing” in their dorm rooms as you are reading this. This is reality!
So think about your skills and interests. How can you leverage those passions into something you enjoy doing every day while earning money for it? If you haven’t lost your job but dread going to work, maybe it’s time to fire your employer and go in a new direction. When you have a game plan for your money and career, you will have a sense of empowerment because you aren’t a slave to the lender (or employer).
When employers start hiring because they believe their businesses will grow, recessions end. Many who have stopped hiring a healthy amount have been paralyzed by fear. They’ve lost hope. People who continue going about their lives in normal ways (without being irresponsible and buying stuff they can't afford) believe in the future. It’s called hope.
You can have fear or hope. It's your choice.
I choose hope.

Suck it up...
I came across this article at BodyRecompositon.com about 9 ways to Deal with Hunger on a diet. The final point in there article I found simply profound. Sometimes, to make the changes you want you have to struggle a little bit - nobody said this would not be easy.
Enjoy!
Julie
9. Suck it Up or Stay Fat
I want to make it clear that I’m not being facetious with the title of this one; and I’m only being slightly obnoxious. Even if you do everything I talked about above, apply every strategy perfectly, the reality is that you will probably still have some hunger on a diet.
Well…too bad. The simple fact is that losing weight requires eating less than you’re burning and this will, at some point, generate hunger. Now, there are exceptions, extremely overweight individuals often find that they have no appetite in the initial stages of dieting but the reality is that eventually hunger will rear it’s ugly head.
At which point every dieter is faced with a fundamental choice which, put simply is this “What’s more important to me, losing weight, or eating this food?” I’d note that this is also a reason I’m so adamant about the flexible dieting strategies, at least one way of dealing with food cravings is to include them in the diet in a controlled fashion. That way the dieter is controlling the diet, instead of the other way around.
But even with that, hunger is a reality of dieting no matter what else you do. Now, you can try to reframe it (Tom Venuto in his new book suggested telling yourself that “Hunger is fatness leaving the body.”) or you can simply accept it (yes, I know, very Zen) and move on.
But none of that makes the hunger go away, it’s just you trying to trick yourself out of feeling bad about it. When that point is reached, there are only two options that I’m going to put very bluntly.
You can suck it up or stay fat.
After you’ve gotten your protein and fruit and fiber and fat and appetite supressants and exercise and flexible dieting strategies down pat, when hunger rears its ugly head, those are the only two options left.
Enjoy!
Julie

After you’ve gotten your protein and fruit and fiber and fat and appetite supressants and exercise and flexible dieting strategies down pat, when hunger rears its ugly head, those are the only two options left.

Cardio might not suck that bad after all...
All of my competitive life I have drudged through cardio. 20-30-40 mins at a time on the stepper...or the treadmill...or the stationary bike. Watching the mins go by and patting myself on the back at the number of calories I can burn in a given period of time. Talk about more boring than watching paint dry. On a 'fun' day I would watch TV or read a book while sweating off the inches. Lord help me, I even rigged up a way to set my laptop up on my spinning bike and balance my way through a little e-mail. Not that those sessions ended up being hard core, but it was better than not doing the cardio at all.
Now though, everything has changed. In the past, 30 mins at a time was about all I could take of the monotony. My new triathlon training has truly changed my outlook on cardio. I am LOVING the challenge of seeing how far I can go in the shortest time period. How many laps can I swim before I have to take a break. How far of a bike ride can I fit in before I need to head back and get Tre from school. The swimming is amazing right now. Today I swam for 45 mins and wanted to go longer. I went more than a mile in the pool and it felt great. I know that at this point, I can jump out of the water and hop on a bike for the 30K biking portion of the race. Not as confident about the 5K run that follows the biking, but on Friday I did run the 3 miles outside. That was my first "long" run since my knee surgery.
So, what have I learned about myself? I really think I have been looking at this whole cardio thing wrong. Yes, it is about burning calories and shaping my body, but today, when I passed the aquatic mile mark, I was really excited and proud of myself. Not because I had burned almost 600 calories (which I did), but because I swam further than I ever have in my life. Just a different way of looking at it I suppose. Wow, what a difference perspective can make.

100 Days out!
So, I have set a date and am excited/nervous/overwhelmed that I will do my first triathlon in 100 days! I have chosen a local race for a GREAT cause - the Tri for Joe in Cincinnati, OH with proceeds going to Down Syndrome research. www.TriforJoe.com Not only is this a great test of endurance and strength, it will be a chance to contribute to a cause that I feel very passionately about. May 17th it is!
It is amazing the difference just having this goal makes. I am not at the point where I am forcing myself to take a day off and have been training twice a day now most of this week. Swimming is getting easier and I swam my first 700 m yesterday in less than 20 mins. Nothing earth shattering, but it is a start. Now if I could get to running that would be nice. Luckily, the knee is feeling strong and I am hoping that I will be allowed to do some modest jogging soon.
Anyone that is up for a real challenge, I encourage you to check it out and get involved. I would love to have some company on race day and see if we can raise some serious money for the event!
I will keep you posted!

New Challenges
I have to share with you how challenging it has been for me to know that the Arnold Fitness International is coming up in about a month and to not be competing there. To be honest, I had BIG plans for that show. Top 3 kind of plans - OK, so top 2 plans really, but that was one of those private goals you hesitate to share in case it doesn't happen ... Since my knee injury and subsequent surgery 10 weeks ago, I have made huge strides and am happy to report that I am right about 80% on that leg. My workouts are strong and I feel really, really good. While I am still not approved for jumping and running yet, I am lifting heavy and doing cardio. One thing I have come to know about myself is that I function much better when I have a solid goal - a time line if you will.
The other thing I have come to accept is that I am EXTREMELY competitive. Ok, so this is not news. To any guy that has lifted next to me in the gym, I am sorry, but yes, I do try to lift heavier than you. If I am on the stepper, you can bet I am trying to go harder than anyone in the room. And in an aerobics class...well, you get the point. Is this a flaw? Maybe. It is me, yes! I have this deep desire to be, not just good, but the BEST I can possibly be. I have cutely described it to my son in the past that, "Mom really likes challenges". I love it when someone tells me that I cannot do something and then I prove them wrong. Or better yet... a GIRL can't do it
So, where does this leave a woman who has been told she cannot do her sport of choice for a few more months. Oh sure, I could let me body rest more, I could actually get my house really, really clean. Or maybe I could take up something 'soft and soothing' - I have thought about yoga and belly dancing several times - even done a few classes and while I enjoyed them, I just didn't see how I could 'beat' anyone there. Then I had an epiphany. Rick was doing a very cool photo shoot with a woman from Dayton that is a Triathlete. She is going for a sponsorship and truly loves her sport. Hmmm....swimming, biking and running. That sounds hard....
Which leads me back to my original point of this post. I am ready for a new challenge - even if it is just to hold me over until I can be flipping again. I am going to do a Triathlon. And when I say 'a', more than likely this will be come a 'thing' for me.... Went out today and bought a one piece bathing suit. Funny, but I have not worn a one piece (sans a rhinestoned one) since I was 12. Anyhow, I also did something for the first time today. I swam 1/2 mile. On paper that sounds pretty easy... Seriously how hard can 1/2 mile be. Well, it took me 30 mins of swimming and a whole lot of gasping for air. 32 laps took longer than I realized.
All of my life I have been a 'sprint' athlete. Diving, cheerleading, gymnastics... all things that you go as hard as you can for right about 2 mins - tops. And more often it is one big burst of power - over in less than 2 seconds. I can lift more than most boys. But ask me to run a mile and well, that could take some time. So, this is COMPLETELY out of my element. Not to mention that technically I have not been 'approved' for running yet with my knee. Hopefully in the next month....
Yesterday I started my 'training'.
- 5 miles of biking
- 1/2 mile of really fast walking
- 1 full body weight training circuit (I fully intend to keep lifting through this)
Today
1/2 mile swimming
Ab workout
The caveat is that I have no intention of looking like an endurance athlete. Not that there is anything wrong with that, I just like the lean, feminine muscle look instead of the skinny fat long distance runner look. So, I have a plan. A very carefully thought through diet that is high in protein (still) so I can maintain muscle while I train a balance of great supplements (Thanks Beverly) and a workout schedule that balances weight training with cardio.
Typically this thread would be a contest countdown and in some way, I guess it is. Only this contest has more to do with how fast I can go than how many millimeters of fat are on my butt. I am excited about the new challenge and comforted to know that the way I plan to tackle this adventure will help me with my sport - Fitness that is. I need to build back and swimming is awesome for that. I want a little more stream lined look for my legs - running & biking. Not to mention what it will do for my cardio vascular endurance. So, here we go again. God love my husband. He is so encouraging. Although I have a feeling when he tells me "you can be the best at whatever sport you want" he had in mind something more low impact...like archery. No, I either want to go hard or go home. Maybe there will be an Ironman in my future... Ok, so maybe I should try to make it through my first race before that.
Welcome to my new contest countdown. Now I need to set a date.

FitBody Photo of the Day
As I was sorting through things on my computer, I came across some pics from the team photo shoot we do at the end of each contest prep team. These were just so motivating and good, that I had to post them here. These ladies worked so hard to get into their best condition ever. I am really proud that they were part of my past teams!

Julie's Pathetic Chocolate Chip Cookies
Every once in awhile I get this overwhelming urge to be a regular mom. You know, the June Cleaver type in the kitchen with an apron that bakes cookies for the kids. So, as I scrounge through my cabinets in search of ingredients to make my son cookies, it strikes me. There is absolutely nothing in my pantry that June would have called a staple. No sugar, no flour and for goodness sake, no butter. Interestingly enough, I did find 1/2 a pack of Hersey chocolate chips and a can of baking powder that I have a feeling came with me in the move from our previous home... 2 years ago. Oh well, I thought. Let's see what we can make
So, here is the recipe for what I like to call:
Julie's Pathetic Chocolate Chip Cookies
3/4 c dry oatmeal
1 scoop Chocolate protein powder - I used Ultra Size
3 egg whites
1/4 tsp baking powder
1/4 c water
1/4 tsp vanilla extract
10-12 chocolate chips
Mix all together and bake at 375 until not gooey - about 7 mins.
Turns out they were pretty good. I suppose it is all relative, but when my boys insisted on buying a roll of cookie dough, I made these for me instead. And not only did I enjoy the cookies, I felt pretty darn good afterwards.
Enjoy!

Fighting Cravings
There was recently a question over at the Muscle & Fitness Hers boards that I thought was especially relavant as we move past the holidays and into contest season. One of the women was asking for tips about how to avoid the super sized box of Oreos her dad would bring home. Below is my response:
I know how tough it can be to eat clean when there is junk food around. I have a 6 yr old little boy that eats clean in general, but that I also allow to have regular kid foods - like cereal and pb&j's. Even in my toughest contest prep, I don't think it is right to deprive him. So, there they sit in my pantry, just taunting me I do have a few things that help me out though -
1 - I keep as much real junk out of my house as possible. High fiber cereal and natural peanut butter is one thing, tubs of cookie dough ice cream are another. Find a balance for your whole family where they can eat great food that is not total junk. You will be less tempted too. This is tough when other people are the ones bringing it in, but a good general rule.
2 - Find healthy alternatives that you like as much or more than the 'bad' foods and keep them readily available. I love chocolate chip cookies, but I can almost always reason with myself that if I avoid the cookies, I can have a protein brownie or an extra serving of protein waffles instead. That has been a lifesaver for me.
3 - Eat 5-6 times a day and include protein in each meal. That should keep you from getting so hungry that you have no willpower left.
4 - Be sure you are drinking enough water. When you are dehydrated, you tend to feel more hungry.
5 - Along the same lines as 2, I will often tell myself that I can eat the cookie, but it means an extra cardio session. The thought of more cardio is enough to make me toss the cookie.
6 - When all else fails, allow yourself a few cookies - BUT only AFTER you have eaten a full serving of vegetables and a big glass of water. Not only will you eat less cookies because you are not so hungry, but it will give you the time to consider if the cookies are really worth it : )
Good Luck!

Competiton Heels
I found a really good deal over at amazon.com on figure, bikini and fitness competition heels. I prefer 4-5 inch clear heels with a strap. The strap part is negotiable, but since I am not in heels on a regular basis, I like the idea that these will stay firmly attached to my foot. This company also offers a mule version of this shoe with no strap. Check it out at: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000M1QBGY/ref=pd_luc_mri?%5Fencoding=UTF8&m=A3M41JOXRPBFB3&v=glance

Arnold 2009
With Christmas comes one of the most anticipated invitation lists of the fitness world. From the moment the Olympia ends, the next question on everyones mind is, "who will be invited to the Arnold?" The Arnold Schwarzenegger Sports Festival is the biggest fitness event in the country. It takes place in Columbus, OH every March and kicks off the IFBB & NPC competitive year. Being invited to the Arnold is a huge honor as only the best of the best are asked to grace that stage. This show has always held a special place in my heart, especially after placing 4th there this past spring. Anyhow, I am disappointed to have to sit out this coming Arnold Classic because of my knee injury. I am 6 weeks post op now and recovering nicely, but it will take a few more months for me to be 100%. That said, I want to offer a sincere congratulations to my friends and colleagues that will be competing there in 2009. Here is the list of Fitness and Figure competitors. Good luck to all and I am really looking forward to seeing you on stage!!!

2 steps forward
12-11-08 - 4.5 weeks after ACL allograft reconstruction...
Time for a quick update! Last night I had physical therapy and while I was really hoping to be taken off crutches, no such luck. While they say it is to give my knee a little more time to heal, I have a sneaking suspicion that it is really to be sure I don't over do things. Apparently, I am slightly overzealous. I have also been told to rest more and lay off the gym for a week as I tend to push myself harder when alone than they push me in therapy. I suppose I should not have asked about incorporating Smith Machine squats...
On the good side, I feel very strong and when I do front pose (ok, not with my heels on : ) my quads look pretty darn good. I have also been watching my diet - not going overboard, just enjoying bigger portions of the clean foods I love and am happy to report that I am leveling out at 133.5 with my bodycomp in the 10% range. This is between 4-5 lbs and 2% bodyfat above my 8 weeks ago contest weight for the Olympia. I am excited about that, but it also kills me knowing that physique-wise I would be ready for the Arnold Classic. It is 12 weeks away this weekend and I would only need to take off the few lbs of fat I have added... However, I compete in Fitness. And if I am not allowed to walk without crutches now there is not a snowball's chance that they will let me get back to flipping in the next month or 2.
So, I have a new plan. Rest and get better. Wow, sounds simple. Maybe I should add make sure that all of my clients are 110% ready for their own spring shows. Whether they will be competing in NPC Figure, Fitness or NPC Bikini, we will make sure they are at their personal best. In fact, I will be working with each woman over the next few months to help them decided if NPC Figure or NPC Bikini is the best choice for them.
With the contest prep team beginning next Saturday and us incorporating workouts into each meeting, I will now get to personally kick their butts. Tracy, Hillary, Jennifer... watch out. I plan to make you all do all the cool plyo stuff that I cannot do right now. No worries though, it will be fun.
So, until next time, I will keep me tush seated, my knee up and my nose to the grindstone getting work done.
Thanks!
Julie
PS - I have one more goal - do all Christmas shopping over the internet this year. Hehehe...it is possible : )

I love my waffles..
I have said this before, but it is worth repeating. Ultra Size waffles rock. While I am not contest dieting right now, I do love to eat clean in general. Every morning (and sometimes at night) I enjoy my protein waffles. And to make a good day even better, I found Promise Fat Free "butter" which contains 5 calories per TBSP. Really can life get much better than a pile of waffles topped with "butter".
Here is my recipe:
1/2 c cooked oatmeal
2 scoops Ultra Size or Ultimate Muscle Protein (100% whey proteins DO NOT work)
4 egg whites or eggbeaters.
a touch of water.
Blend together and cook in a waffle maker or as pancakes. Be sure to use a little cooking spray.
Enjoy!

Three weeks after surgery and making progress
I would be lying if I tried to pass the last 3 weeks off as easy. Since having my ACL allograft reconstruction surgery, there has been a lot of swelling, bruising, pain and hours of physical therapy. I have been forced to ask for help with simple things like making meals or carrying, well, really anything since I am on crutches.
It is down right humbling that 2 months ago I was squatting 175+ and now a single leg squat with no weight at all brings me close to tears. Or how about leg press where on a really good day, I can press 60 lbs with that leg. While it is tough right now, I have to say how happy I am overall at the progress I am making. My quad muscle is much stronger than last time and I have been able to keep most all of my size and definition. Strength is another story, but I have been assured that it will come back as I am able to use my leg more and more.
On the positive side, I have been promoted to one crutch and am able to workout daily now! That means that I am slightly less stir crazy and that I also have a hand available to carry things with me. This has made my son very happy as he was really getting tired of carrying his own coat and toys while we were out : )
Anyhow, I wanted to send out a little update on my progress. Rest assured that I am well on my way back and doing well. It seems everyday that I notice improvements and before too long, I should be back to 'normal'. We will see what normal means now... :)

Recovering nicely, thank you for asking!
11-20-08
10 days after my ACL reconstruction, I am doing pretty well. I have full flexion of my knee and have just been promoted to 50% weight bearing on that leg. Still on crutches of course, but at least I can stand with my weight evenly distributed on both feet. I am also moving up in the world of physical therapy - I can now squat and bridge. It might be a far cry from the wide, deep quad sweep building squats I was doing just 2 short months ago...but hey, not bad for this soon after surgery. The key is to take it easy and not push too hard. Or at least that is what everyone keeps telling me. My swelling has been interesting and the latest oddity is a hematoma that has left a nice baseball size bump just below my knee. No worries though, it will go down soon enough and for now I just have to keep working it out.
My main concern right now is holding on to my muscle. My weight has leveled out at 135 which is only 5 lbs or so up from my onstage Olympia weight. I am keeping up with my supplements and protein intake as diet is the most important part.
Thank you for all of the well wishes and concern.
More to come!

NPC Bikini Division
New NPC Division - BIKINI
For full details, check out my website: www.JulieLohre.com

HELLO BIKINI - In response to the overwhelming number of women that would like to compete in the NPC but cannot gain or choose not to have the amount of muscle needed to be competitive in figure a new division is being introduced for 2009.
Welcome BIKINI Division! This division will be judged in a Two Piece suit, just as figure and fitness are, but will focus on shape and conditioning without as much muscle. Women competing in this division must still be in great physical shape. The best example I have been given so far is to look to the winners of the Flex Bikini search at this year's Olympia. The top 5 women there clearly workout and are in shape, but do not have a large amount of muscle.
To be clear, this is not a Hawaiian Tropic swimsuit contest, it is still a physique contest - just think more like a Shape magazine model.
The rules that I have heard so far are that there will be no cross overs within a single contest from Bikini into Figure or Fitness because they want to make a distinction between the type of physiques. Show promoters next year will have the option to add this new class and at the earliest Bikini will become part of the IFBB in 2010. National shows next year may start to have a Bikini division and start turning some women pro in this division.
In my opinion this is a great addition to the NPC shows and should be a huge step to bringing our sport in the mainstream. I think that each women should be able to step back and decide what look they want to work toward. This new category will open NPC doors to women that would have previously needed to go to another organization to competitive. I plan to work with each of my clients individually to help them decide if they would be more competitive in Figure, Fitness or Bikini.

Thanks!

Back to the gym...kind of
Saturday, November 15th
It is 5 days since my surgery and I have been itching to get back to some kind of workout that involved more than a straight leg raise. So, this morning, I scooted myself down the stairs to my basement gym and spent a few minutes figuring out what the heck I could do lifting-wise given my therapists ruling - "no weight on that leg at all". Apparently she and my husband think there is a tiny chance that I might try to over do things if left to my own devices. So, I have begrudgingly agree to run everything past them before I do it. As much as I hate limitations, I don't want to make things worse! I did sweet talk her into the bike - just free wheel, no resistance. After 5 painful mins on the bike (while I have range of motion it does not mean that my knee is happy about bending) I decided to move over to my rowing machine. That ended up working very well as I only did the upper body/back portion of the rower and let my legs stayed put. Then I got to thinking. The rower may just be my saving grace. I have always said that competitively a bigger, thicker back is a good idea, so I might as well embrace it. My goal is to do 15 mins of rower 3 times per week for the next several months in addition to the usual back work. Well, I am off on a tangent now, but here is how the morning broke down...
Stretching
5 min spin bike - ouch!
15 min rowing machine
3 x 10 lat pull downs
Then my therapy leg exercises which consist of:
3 sets of 15 Straight leg raises
3 sets of 15 Side leg raises
3 sets of 15 rear leg raises
modified ham ball curl ins - simply a rom movement, hips on the ground.
Banded knee extension - basically using a tad of resistance to take my knee from bent to straight in a standing position.
Well, I am bored just writing this but know how incredibly important it is to both take it easy and to keep my quad active.
I am repeating these therapy exercises 3 times a day and for the first time in 6 years, have taken a short nap every day. The bad news is that I have to sleep in a HUGE leg brace so that I do not hurt myself at night, the good news is that I am sleeping really solid. I guess my body needs the rest.
One thing I have not mentioned yet is what supplements I am taking to aid in recovery. In the past I have said how important it is to take high quality supplements while dieting or getting ready for a show. Well, I know that during injury recovery proper supplementation is even more important and I keep a supply of Beverly Int sups at my house just to be sure I have what I need. Here is the low down:
Every day:
1 super pak
3 Fish oil capsules
10 g of Glutamine Select
Three times a day:
2 Ultra 40
2 Muscularity
- I am including 4 scoops of protein powder in my diet everyday whether with my protein pancakes or as a shake.
I am out of Joint Care right now, but plan to get that on Monday as it makes a HUGE difference.
Off to ice my knee and resume my knee in the air position : )
Have a great weekend!

It pays to be in shape...
11-13-08
It has been 72 hrs now since my ACL revision and I am thrilled with how my recovery is going. The therapist has told me I must be a freak of nature and that they have never seen someone regain their range of motion so quickly. The dreaded CPM machine is history as I maxed it out on the second day. At this point, I can bend my knee more than 140 degrees which is pretty darn close to full range and the swelling is modest. I was also fortunate to know that keeping my quad and hamstring strong pre and post op are very important. I continued exercising my quads/hams/glutes after the injury and up to the day before surgery. The night of surgery, I started flexing my quad right away and trying to lift my leg. One of the dangers with this type of knee surgery is how quickly the quad will atrophy if not stimulated - I believe muscle wasting starts within 48 hours and from there it is a struggle to re-build symmetry. And in our physique sports, symmetry is so important! It looks like I was able to start this quick enough to not loose any muscle there!!!
Doc must have been very nice to me in the operating room too because while I have swelling and bruising, it is mild considering the surgery.
My doctor and I chose to go with an allograft (donor tissue) for my ACL revision as they had already taken the middle third of my patellar graft in the first ACL reconstruction on this knee. The biggest benefit for me is that there was no harvest site on my body that has to now heal. That means a lot less pain and a much easier recovery. I have always felt strongly that it is such a blessing to choose to donate organs or tissue, but never has it struck home so strongly. I am going to look into what I can do to encourage tissue donation on a larger scale now. Thank you, thank you, thank you to the angel that made this decision and has helped me so much.
So, from here, the danger is that I might feel too good. Strange but true. It is going to take a long time for the graft to incorporate and vascularize into my body and while my muscles surrounding the knee are strong, the knee is not. I am trying hard to listen to my drs and hubby and just take it easy. I must admit, sitting around is something I have never been good at. On the bright side I am starting to feel good enough to get back to e-mail (well, in between my pain medicine). Don't get me wrong, this is no walk in the park, but compared to my other 2 ACL surgeries, it is soooo much better. I am really glad we went forward with the surgery when we did and that I can now focus on recovery.
Time for more rest, but I will keep you posted on how things are going. And if you are someone that stumbled across my blog looking for info on ACL Reconstruction I cannot recommend allograft enough!!! The recovery is SOOOOO MUCH BETTER.
Good luck & God Bless!

Surgery Complete
Hi All! Well I am 12 hours post op from my ACL surgery and not feeling too bad. Very tired and sore, but we are managing the pain from surgery and I have begun some very minimal exercises to keep my quad working well. I want to say THANK YOU for the outpouring of well wishes I have received this week and all day. It means so much that my clients and friends are here for me and saying a few extra prayers. All went well with the surgery and I am very happy to have that behind me. Now, time to heal and relax a bit.
Love,
Julie
Love,
Julie

Out of the show
Hi All,
Sorry for the delay. This has been a trying few days, but I am feeling good now and moving forward. It was heart breaking to have made it to the Olympia stage after months - actually make that years - of hard work and dieting and to not be able to complete the show. Some of you may have seen, but I was injured during the third fitness round, doing my routine on stage and could not finish the routine. Well, the verdict is in, I talked with my Dr and I have indeed torn my left ACL again along with a significant sprain/small tear of my MCL. After much debate and thought, I have surgery scheduled for November right after the IFBB/NPC Kentucky Muscle show. There is just so much going on in Oct, I want to get my team through their fall shows and get through my son's birthday before undergoing the procedure. The recovery should be several weeks of little to no activity, so really, the hard part other than physical therapy will be forcing myself to sit on my tush : ) I am able to walk albeit slowly and with a modest brace for the time being. That said, I will get it done, heal and move forward from there. Just a little bump in the road. We all suffer setbacks. Fitness is not an easy sport, but then again what fun would it be if it were easy?
It is through suffering and hardships that we learn the most about ourselves and how strong we really are. I thank God everyday that I he has blessed me with finding this sport and making it such a big part of my life. Don't plan on me going anywhere. I might not be on a stage soon, but I will certainly be here promoting the women that chose to push themselves beyond 'average' or pretty good and become the extraordinary person that have always wanted to be. It's about dedication and focus. And from time to time rolling with the punches. I never could have imagined that so many of my dreams would come true when I stepped into the Arnold expo 5 years ago. I was just a curious new mom with some lbs to lose. Little did I realize that the competitor and athlete that has been inside of me for years would find an outlet to shine. It all fell into place, one meal at a time, one workout at a time, one show at a time.
Thank you so much for all of the support and love you have been throwing my way. It has made such a difference in my life and my outlook.
Julie :)

Tired, hungry and ready to compete...
I have one 3 coats of tan and just finished up the meet the Olympians event. It was wonderful to see so many fans and I had a great time talking with everyone. To tell you the truth right now, I am feeling really run down. When I got back to my room of course I jumped in front of the mirror and as I suspected, looked flat as a pancake. After eating a little (fish, steak, asparagus, sweet potato and a glass of wine) - POOF - I am vascular and full again. It is amazing what a difference a little food makes!
So, one more coat of tan then I am hitting the hay. I am so tired that I actually think I will be able to sleep tonight. The anticipation is tough, but really, I just want tomorrow to come.
Good night all!

12 weeks out from the 2008 Fitness Olympia
It has been a fantastic summer full of changes for me! Having not competed since March, this has been the longest 'break' I have had from competing since my pro debut 3 years ago. Not that 4 months is a long off season, but when you compete over 20 times in 5 yrs, dieting and am cardio become a way of life. In that time, I have packed more business changes, photo shoots, camps, clinics and time with my family than I ever dreamed possible. My days have been a wonderful combo of family fun time at the swimming pool, in person consultations, being on the phone or e-mail with my clients, my own outdoor training and workouts and my new role as Production Manager for Rick Lohre Photography. I cannot tell you how blessed I feel to be doing what I love for a living and getting to be Tre's Mom!
That said, I am ready to get back in the zone and up on stage. I love getting ready for a show and at this one, I want to take the cake. While I lead a very healthy lifestyle in general, I have enjoyed a few extra cheat meals and slept in more often than I have been up at the crack of dawn for cardio. The good news for me is that I have stayed within my target range of less than 10 lb weight gain and less than 4% bodyfat increase. So, I start my Fitness Olympia prep at 11.5% body fat. Nothing to complain about! It will be tough from time to time but I am sticking with the same goal that I have for every show I do. Beat my last personal best - or for this show, come in better than I did at the Arnold 08.
Starting at 10 weeks out I will begin my "Countdown to the 2008 Olympia" in the members area of my website. In it, I will detail my training, cardio, nutrition, supplement plan and weekly progress. It might not always be pretty, but I will be honest. I don't cut corners, I don't do things that could hurt my health or integrity - I work hard, diet hard and stay focused on my goals. Be sure to check it out - I have big plans for this season : )

Excellent show on www.bodysport.com
I want to encourage everyone to check out the current radio show at www.BodySport.com. In this episode, Terry & Elaine Goodlad speak with Christina Camilleri, and eating disorder specialist. Eating disorders are a very common, serious issue and I talk with women almost daily that struggle with these problems. The show was incredibly enlightening and very well done. Thank you to Terry & Elaine for their candid commentary and for talking about something that is often hidden.

Florence Fitness Festival
After an incredible week in Italy, I am finally on my way home. I had the pleasure of working with a great team of athletes - Melvin Anthony, Phil Heath, Jessica Paxson-Putnam and Peter Putnam. The Festival itself was huge with athletes and vendors from all over Europe in attendance. With exercise class demonstrations in everything from spinning to Mumba, extreme sports like inline skating and parkour, to countless fitness related vendors the whole city of Florence was hopping with exercise fever.
Our mission was to bring the Flex & Muscle & Fitness magazines to life. A full gym was set up for us to train in each day and at points we brought members of the audience on to the floor for training. We performed for the crowds of fans and I was able to do my fitness routine many times. We signed autographs, did spots for the Italian television and even were the guest judges at the best abs contest for the men, Ms. Bikini Contest for the women, Battle of the biceps, Squat contest and several other contests. The Muscle e-Motion team did a fabulous job with the event and it was an incredible success. Check out some of the photos on the Flex Blog.
For now I am recovering from a little jetlag and digging my way out of e-mail but cannot tell you what an amazing experience the week was. I am glad that I learned some Italian, it came in handy many times!
Ciao!

Flex Swimsuit Issue
Well, I didn't think I'd get a chance to see it before we take off for Italy and the Florence Fitness Festival, but I found a FLEX magazine swimsuit issue in the local Target. I was shopping for all of my last minute supplies for the trip when I decided to see whether they happen to have any early copies. To my luck here's what I found. Will share some more after I've gotten a chance to soak it all in...

Fitness Modeling Workshops Wrap Up
This weekend's fitness modeling workshop was a huge success! Women came in from all over to gain the experience they needed in front of the camera, build their modeling portfolio and most importantly to gain confidence in themselves and their abilities. We laughed together, we cried together and at the end of the weekend each woman could look back and see how far she had come. I was thrilled to get to work with each of the women one on one and can't wait to share the photos!
Here are a few photos from the weekend. LOTS more to come!

New photos from Lohre Creative at River Imaging Studio
After your figure or fitness contest
As I sit here eating my protein brownie, (with oatmeal in it, thank you very much!) I was thinking about how everyone is doing with there off seasons. Now I know that many of you are still actively competing right now but for those of you that are waiting until fall or next year, how are you maintaining in the off season?
I have personally been enjoying eating more of my favorite diet foods, along with adding in some of my favorite non-diet foods. In moderation all things are good, right? While no one would accuse me of eating like a typical American, I have had a little wine and a few smores over the neighborhood camp fires. The first few weeks after my contest were hard because I never really felt full. If I had let myself, I could have stayed in the kitchen most of the day. But all in all, clean eating tends to prevail at my house and we are eating our protein waffles, chicken and veggies much more often than anything else. It has been really nice for a while not to count calories, but I do find that when I sit back and think through what I have eaten for the day, it is typically in the 1800-2200 cal range. (Except on the wine & smore days...)
I allow myself to gain a few % bodyfat - I am up 6-8 lbs from my pre-water depletion contest weight and 2% bodyfat. However, it is important that we don't get too far out of shape. That said, I have appearances throughout May and will be competing again in July so I do have the added motivation to make my next contest dieting that much easier.
How about you? How did you do this time after your contest? I try to stress to others and live the words myself - Contests are only one day. You have to prepare and diet with the rest of your life in mind. Don't do anything so extreme that it will hurt you in the long run. And for goodness sakes, enjoy the process or don't do it!
Have a great day!

Fitness Model turns stylist for upcoming Fitness Modeling Workshops
With many of my recent photo shoots, I have become very comfortable in front of the camera. Well, next weekend, I get to be on the other side - helping the women attending our Fitness Modeling workshop learn how to move and twist with the best of them. Rick Lohre (www.lohrecreative.com) will be taking up and coming models through a series of photo shoot scenarios giving them the experience of a real photo shoot without the pressure. I will be at the women's side throughout the process for modeling and body position direction as well as giving talks on all things related to fitness modeling. One of my favorite parts of getting ready for the shoots has been shopping for the wardrobe. Usually, I do not like to shop - but that is when I am shopping for myself! For whatever reason it is much easier for me to find great bikinis and workout clothing for others. I am really enjoying my role as shoot stylist.

When in Rome!
This past week I decided that it is high time I learn a second language and since I am headed to Italy next month, Italian it is! I have always loved the Italian culture, landscape and of course the wine, so it is exciting to think I may be able to understand a bit of what is being said over there. The Rosetta Stone software has been a great help and each day I am practicing a bit more. Tre is working on it along with me. In fact, he is doing his lesson as I type. We decided that it would be our own secret language here in the states and when he gets to go to Europe in the near future, he will be ready.
Have a great night!

FITBODY RECIPE - BBQ Chicken Pizza

FITBODY RECIPE - BBQ Chicken Pizza
While for many of you that are prepping for a fitness or figure competition "cringe" just hearing the word PIZZA, this simple recipe can be worked into most off season diets either as a cheat, or for those on a more strict plan could be worked into the early contest prep plans (6+ weeks out).
I came up with this recipe as Julie was prepping for a contest a few seasons back. While I try to be as supportive as possible while she is on a strict diet, Tre and I do get the craving for a good pizza now and then. Eating a Papa Johns or LaRosa's pizza in front of her while she is 2 weeks out from a show however, is simply taking my life into my own hands! LOL! I hope you enjoy the recipe!

Motivation
As I do my morning cardio in preparation for the Arnold Classic, my mind tends to wonder. Something that has really helped me jump out of bed and onto the spinning bike is knowing that in just a few weeks, I will be on the most prestigious stage in a tiny bikini! Also, motivational quotes : )
Here is one of my favorites - My body will do what my mind tells it too.
Go enjoy the day!

Angie Gustafson
This month I am excited to profile a woman that I have had the pleasure of working with in my online training program AND was able to meet in person at my Winter Boot Camp. In her 8 week online training, Angie has lost more than 11 lbs and approximately 6% bodyfat going from about 19% bodyfat down to 13%. Angie has worked incredibly hard and is preparing for her first Figure show this spring. Look for her to be bringing home several trophies with this type of determination.

February Fitness Update
There maybe a chill in the air, but it will be no time before the contest season begins and we shed our fluffy winter coats for beautiful sequenced figure suits! The Arnold Sports Festival will kick off the Spring Contest season on Feb 29th - Leap Day! This is so much more than a show...it is a fitness extravaganza. If you are looking for some serious motivation, make your way to Columbus, Ohio for this incredible weekend. I personally am extremely excited because I will be competing there for the first time ever. Yes, after 3 years as an IFBB Fitness pro, I get the honor of competing with 11 other of the best Fitness competitors in the world. Wish me luck! If you will not be able to make it to Ohio, be sure to check out www.BodyBuilding.com for LIVE coverage of the events.
Right after the Arnold comes the Team FitBody photo shoots followed by the NPC Northern Kentucky Bodybuilding and Figure show - the biggest NPC event in our area. My Spring Contest Prep team has been working hard and making incredible progress over the last several months. They are in the home stretch now! Stay strong ladies, all of your hard work will be paying off very soon.
This spring is your chance to make serious progress toward your goals. Take advantage of the extra space in both your gym's parking lot and the cardio equipment now that the January rush of New Year's resolutioners has past. Re-new your own resolve to reach your goals and don't let anything hold you back. It is easy to commit to something for a few weeks, but do you have what it takes to stay focused when time gets tight and the drive thru would be a quick dinner solution? Don't be NORMAL. Don't quit and find excuses to avoid eating clean and exercising when it gets tough. YOU are worth the extra effort. And for those of you that have a burning desire to compete, let this be the year you make your dreams come true. The view FROM the stage, knowing what it took you to get there, is amazing.
Go follow your dreams! I am excited to be making mine come true in 9 days.

Julie :)

Figure & Fitness FitBody Camp Report:
What an incredible weekend! I just want to say THANK YOU to all of the women that attended and made this weekend one I will remember forever. There were 14 women participating ranging from those prepaing for their first show sometime this year to National level competitors ready to
take it to the next level.
With seminars on everything from posing to training and dieting and photo shoots to a full Mock Competition on stage, everyone learned something new and became a better competitor. We had so much fun sweating and laughing together - you all have energized me and helped me gain the focus I need to push through my final weeks to the Arnold. Each woman brought something of herself to the camp and made it truly special. I am honored to have been able to work with each of you and want you to know that I feel like a better competitor myself after what we shared this weekend. Thank you from the bottom of my heart and I CANNOT wait to do it again.
Here is what one of the women had to say about this weekend:
"I just wanted to let you know that I had a great time this past weekend. I learned so much and just wish I had done something like this prior to my first show. It would have helped tremendously, especially in knowing what to expect. The camp was not only excellent for gaining information on the competitions and what the judges are looking for in a competitor, but in meeting other women that share similar goals. The informal time of dinner and lunch was just as beneficial to me as the more structured content. Your input has been extremely valuable, and hopefully, I can reach my personal goals. You have a wonderful personality and a lovely family. I wish you all the luck at the Arnold. We will be pulling for you here in Charleston, WV! "

How to make an effective "New Years Resolution"
6 Practical Tips to help you make your Resolution "Stick"
Avoid choosing a resolution that you've not had success with in the past. Chosing a resolution that you have had previous failures or difficulties attaining will only add to your sense of frustration.
If you really want to make a resolution that you have in the past, change it slightly to make sure you don't come up with the same results you have in the past.
Example: Deciding that you want to compete and win your first show might be a lofty goal if you have never competed before. Make a resolution to come in your absolute best to your first show, to learn the most you can from each competition and better your last placing. Realizing that every show is a stepping stone will allow you to have longer lasting more actionable goals.
Chose attainable goals. Often when we make resolutions, they are far too difficult or lofty, leading to disappointment and frustration.
Instead of resolving to lose 40 lbs by summer, commit yourself to a different resolution that will help you attain the previous...perhaps making a resolution to journal your meals and slowly alter poor eating habits. This slow but steady change in your behavior will allow you to still realize your goals, but perhaps on a different, more reasonable timeframe. Evaluate your goals on a monthly basis and when you've had success with one, add or adapt to another. By committing to a monthly goal, you are more likely to build an attitude of change.
WRITE IT DOWN! Building a game plan is most effective when you have a concrete set of plans. When you build a house, you start with a detailed drawing of what you want to acheive.
When you are able to see the final outcome it is much easier to follow the plans you set out. A builder does not simply start laying the framework without knowing how large the house will be. If you set a goal and don't write it down, you are more likely to change it to make it easier or more attainable. Having it written down forces you to acknowledge your committment and holds you accountable.
Break it down. While writing your goal down will help you see the big picture, breaking it down will allow you to create a simple set of plans that build on each other to attain your final goal. Having steps to attain your goal allows you a path to follow that prevents straying from the main plan.
This way, even if you do not make your final goal, you will have had multiple smaller successes to look back on.
Reward yourself for completing a step or milestone. But be careful to not undermine your goals. If you are trying to lose weight you might want to make your reward, non food related. You might instead treat yourself to a special spa treatment or new outfit.
Small treats for your committment, other than the goal itself, are often necessary to reinforce your behavioral changes and successes.
Give yourself time. It is difficult to make immediate changes to any behavior. Stick with it and realize that it takes 21 days to create a habit. Often times it can take up to 4 or 5 months to incorporate it as a part of your daily life.

Happy Fit New Year!
Happy New Year! I hope that you had a wonderful holiday season with family and friends! This year was very special because I was able to experience Christmas through the eyes of our 5 year old son, Tre. They are few things better in the world than waking up Christmas morning with a little boy standing by your bed, eyes wide, smiling from ear to ear because Santa came! Speaking of which, Santa was very good to me. In addition to some wonderful presents, I received an invitation to the most prestigious fitness contest in the world, the Fitness International at the Arnold Classic in Columbus, OH! Competing at the Arnold has been a goal of mine for years and knowing that I am considered amongst the top 12 competitors in the world is just amazing. I have already begun working hard to make this my best show yet.
While the Holidays were fun, I am truly relieved that the constant temptation of cookies, parties and hearty foods are soon to be a thing of the past. I had a few cheats over the last few weeks and if nothing else, they made me appreciate how good I feel when I eat clean. Let's resolve to make Jan the month we get back on track and make significant progress toward our nutritional goals. You really can reach your fitness goals - you just have to set your mind to it.
Wishing you a Healthy, Happy and Fit New Year!

Protein Pancakes
I just had to share my lastest addition to the figure girls fav - protein pancakes. I have been eating my morning pancakes without oatmeal to avoid the complex carbs, but discovered that a little fat free cottage cheese (1/2 c to be exact) can really give them some body.
Oh, and top them with some blueberries or strawberries - YUM!
Enjoy!

Figure Competitor Spotlight - Allison Schlegel
Standing Proud...
Allison Schlegel
So you think your contest prep is tough???
Occasionally someone does something so amazing that I can't help but share their experience with others. I am working with an incredible woman right now who just competed in the INBF Iraq Bodybuilding and Figure show. We all know the kind of work and dedication it takes to geton stage and the obstacles that you must over come. However, this woman is in the Army, was deployed to Iraq...and went through her entire contest prep there while serving our country. Talk about MY HERO!!! Periodically, she cannot get to a gym, so we came up with an exercise program that can done without traditional weights. I will occasionally get an e-mail saying that she could not get to the gym (none there!) but she did 500 walking lunges and 200 pushups followed by a full gear run for cardio. We know how hard it is to stick to a contest diet when you are in control of preparing your food, imagine the difficulties involved when you have to head to the Mess hall for your 3 squares each day. With this kind of determination it is no surprise that Allison not only WON the Overall in Figure, but also entered the women's Bodybuilding category and won that Overall as well.
From now on, any time I think... it is too hard to find the right food, tod I am just too tired to get my cardio/workout/routine practice in, oayr I am just too busy, etc. etc. I will think about Allison and know that if she can do it, Army food and all, then I have NO EXCUSES!
Congratulations Allison!

Camp 300 - Hardcore training
Inspired by the movie 300 I have changed up my training to move out of the gym and into the mud! Camp 300 is a combination of plyometric movements, aerobic endurance and weight lifting that focuses on the whole body. We get to do fun things like swing sledge hammers, pull chains and flip tractor trailer tires. All in all it is a tough workout for a Fitness & Figure girl! What I love is that it challenges my body in ways traditional weight training does not. For Figure competitions, I focused on adding muscle to my lats and quads. For Fitness competitions, I focused on perfecting my routines and having lots of flexibility and strength moves. Camp 300 incorporates the best of both and while the 60 min workout is tough, it is a lot of fun.
Have a great night!

Amanda Moran
Despite breaking her ankle the weekend before her first NPC show, Amanda was determined to put all the months of training and dieting to the test. In absolutely amazing condition, she hobbled her way to 1st place at the IFBB/NPC Kentucky Muscle Pro-am show in November. Look for Amanda to be back on stage in 08 - this time without the cast : )

Figure & Fitness women take stage
The fall contest season was a huge success with shows from August straight through Dec. We are so proud of the entire Fall FitBody Team including Marci Purcey and Amanda Moran who both won their classes at the NPC Kentucky Muscle show. SPC Allison Schlegel also took the Overall in both Figure and Women's Bodybuilding at the INBF Iraq BB & Figure show. It was absolutely inspiring to see first time competitors walk on stage, fulfilling their contest dreams as well as some national competitors taking another step closer to the pro stage.
Congrats to all the women that have worked so hard and fulfilled their fitness & figure dreams!

Eating Clean over the holidays
While it is challenging, eating clean over the holidays is not as hard as you might think. it takes preparation and a clear vision of where you want to be once the last gift is opened and it is time to take the tree down. I would encourage you to sit down and write 3 long term fitness goals that you want to accomplish in the new year and 3 short term goals that you want to fulfill in the next month. Having your goals on paper makes a big difference. Do you want 2008 to be the year you compete for the first time in a figure competition? Do you want to fit into your favorite old pair of jeans that have been getting tighter and tighter as the weather has gotten cold? Whatever your long term goals, be sure that you chose a few 'smaller' short term goals that will help you get there.
Yours in fitness!

4th at Europa Supershow!
2007 IFBB Europa Wrap-up:

Top 5
1st - Adela Garcia
2nd – Tanji Johnson
3rd – Mindi O’Brein
4th – ME!
5th – Amy Haddad
Hope you were able to catch the show on www.BodyBuilding.com. I am sooooo happy with everything I brought. This was my best ever conditioning and total package. In subjective sports like fitness & figure, I feel the only real way to know how you are doing is to compare yourself to your previous conditioning. This was my 17th show after a 10 month break/off season in which I added about 4 lbs of muscle to my body. I learn something new about myself and the process each time I compete. It is exhilerating to feel so comfortable on stage and to do so well – getting first call out, standing next to Adela Garcia on stage and gaining the respect of my fellow competitors is another “best moment” for me. My new routine is very hard, so fun and incorporates almost everything I am good at. There is a cool new 'flexibility' portion that I feel is pretty unique. I thank God for giving me the ability to perform and for keeping my safe through this process. Thanks to all of the women that stayed up late with us, kicked back after the show and enjoyed to enormous pizzas. Fun with friends at and after each show is something I always look forward to. We all work incredibly hard and do our best. I respect you all greatly and can’t wait to see you again in 2 weeks. Julie

I DID IT!!! New Oxygen Abs Cover
I am soooo excited to let you know I have accomplished both a career and lifetime goal. This summer, I am the Cover Girl for the Oxygen Abs Collectors edition. The issue is due out June 5th, but reports are in that some airports are getting them on shelves now! So, if you are walking through your favorite bookstore or super market be sure to check out the mag rack and look for me. Thank you to all of the wonderful people at Oxygen - especially Stacy, Kristin, Alicia and Allison as well as photographer Robert Reiff and writer Chris Cander. I am just overwhelmed and humbled to be included in the articles and blown away that I am on the cover. Be sure to check out the page where I am next to Madonna! How cool!!!!

So you think your contest prep is tough???
Occasionally someone does something so amazing that I can't help but share their experience with others. I am working with an incredible woman right now who is preparing for a figure competition - Allison S. We all know the kind of work and dedication it takes to get on stage and the obstacles that you must over come. However, this woman is in the Army (National Guard Honor Guard), is getting ready to be deployed to Iraq...and is still continuing with her contest prep. While training for the deployment, she cannot get to a gym, so we came up with some programs to be done without traditional weights. I will occasionnally get an e-mail saying that she could not get to the gym (none there!) but she did 500 walking lunges and 200 pushups followed by a full gear run for cardio. With this kind of determination she will definitely accomplish her goals! She is even working with others currently in Iraq to add Figure to a Bodybuilding show that will be held there this fall.

From now on, any time I think... it is too hard to find the right food, today I am just too tired to get my cardio/workout/routine practice in, or I am just too busy, etc. etc. I will think about Allison and know that if she can do it, Army food and all, then I have NO EXCUSES!
Here is a photo she just passed along to me (Allison is in the center). She is one 15 women in company of 140+. Stay strong and safe Allison & THANK YOU FOR PROTECTING OUR COUNTRY!
